Interview with 13 Year Old Author Tate Linders! Podcast #12

April 6, 2015 by Daniel Johnston Leave a Comment

Hi everyone, I’m really excited to present you with this interview today. It’s with Tate Linders, the author of Mystery on the Missing Ship, which she wrote when she was only just eleven years old!

Now she’s a published author (in the intro I mistakenly say she’s traditionally published; she is self-published, but had an editor and some people to help get her book out. That’s also not clear in the interview, so I wanted to make sure and explain that for you), working on her second book.

It all came when she read the Titanic Series by the writer who also happens to be my greatest inspiration, Gordon Korman! When she revealed this in the interview I was pretty floored, haha.

But after reading that she got inspired and decided to write a Titanic mystery/romance/crime/historical fiction all wrapped into about a hundred pages! She relates in the interview how she only wrote for a little bit of time each day for a year (personally I can’t understand how she could be that patient and not just do the whole thing at once, and a little amazed that she kept preserving like that for a whole year; it should be an example to all writers of what’s possible and what we can do).

Her book is on Kindle Unlimited for free, so check it out if you want. The romance is pretty heavy, and it’s also extremely fast-moving with tons of action. It’s a quick read, so again you can get it here on Amazon.

Here’s the interview where you can hear all the details of exactly what she did and what happened. I hope you’re inspired by Tate’s story like I am!

The Readers and Writers Paradise Podcast Episode 11

February 28, 2015 by Daniel Johnston Leave a Comment

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your support of Kid Writers Magazine Edition #2! It’s great to see the magazine getting into the hands of readers.

Today I’m releasing another episode of the podcast, which is something I know I haven’t done in awhile. My plan is to come out with a lot more in the future, so you can look forward to that. People have told me the podcast is their favorite thing about the site, and I enjoy doing it, too.

Download the podcast

Episode 11 is basically a discussion of different books that I’ve been reading lately. In the future it’ll be really cool to invite different people onto the podcast and have a discussion of books with them, so that’s something I plan on doing.

By the way, Erik and Felicia have been doing something called The Write Chat where they interview writers, and it’s really hilarious and well done. Both of them are published authors themselves, and they put all their humor into their episodes! So definitely check that out.

I hope you enjoy this episode and let me know what you think as well as of my comments about the books. I apologize for the background noise, I just ordered a new microphone so in the future that will be gone!

Rochester Children’s Book Festival Interviews! Podcast 10

November 26, 2014 by Daniel Johnston 1 Comment

I had a fantastic time this Saturday morning visiting the Rochester Children’s Book Festival. At the event were dozens of great authors, tons of great events (including one funny one where kids were reading to dogs!), and plenty of great workshops and read-alongs. Although I haven’t been to many other book festivals, others have told me that this is one of the best run book festivals in the country, and I can easily see why.

In this podcast I interview six authors who were very kind and agreed to let me interview them for you guys. Below I have info on all the authors in order of their interviews and their information (and what time in the podcast their interviews start). I hope you find these as inspiring and interesting as I did.

I also got this illustration of myself as a “super writer” by Suzanne Bloom, who did a “super reader” illustration for Erik last year. It only took her about thirty seconds to do, which was pretty cool to see.

The Readers and Writers Paradise Podcast 009: Shredderman by Wendelin Van Draanen

April 9, 2014 by Daniel Johnston 1 Comment

Hi everyone, thanks so much for checking out my podcast. Today I want to talk about one of my favorite book series ever. You heard that right; not just kids book series, but any books.

Shredderman by Wendelin Van Draanen has inspired me a ton, and this website would probably not exist without it. In Shredderman, a fourth grader named Nolan Byrd decides to set up a website called shredderman.com to expose the worst bully at his school Bubba Bixby.

Even though Nolan is a nerd at school, everyone loves his website and Bubba even ends up getting suspended. Nolan later solves a local crime, blows the lid on a man known as “the mole,” and even helps the government when people sell classified documents.

Nolan’s website turns him into an awesome force for good. I’d recommend this series mostly for 2nd to 6th grade boys, and for any type of reader, reluctant or compulsive. I talk about it in more detail in the podcast.

The Readers and Writers Paradise Podcast 008: The Million Dollar Series by Dan Gumtan

April 2, 2014 by Daniel Johnston Leave a Comment

One of my favorite book series for kids is the million dollar series by Dan Gutman. In the series there are five books-covering a variety of sports-that each give a kid the opportunity to win a million bucks.

Dan Gutman writes books kids want to read, and this is no exception. There was one kid I know of who didn’t want to read The Million Dollar Shot but after his mom showed him my review he decided to read it and now he loves it!

So I decided to do my podcast this week about this great book series. I talk all about the five different books and which I’d recommend getting first. Let me know what you think of the podcast in the comments below!
